Sacred Threads Art Quilt Exhibit March 4-25!

Crystal Coast Quilters’ Guild, Core Sound Museum & Heritage Center and the Carteret County Public Library System are again partnering for National Quilting Month and bringing the Sacred Threads’ Expressing Life’s Journeys exhibit to Carteret County.  For the past 10 years, Sacred Threads has staged an annual art quilt exhibit featuring the categories of Joy, Spirituality, Healing, Grief, Inspiration and Peace/Brotherhood. According to Laurie Mayo, Guild President, “The travelling exhibit contains works by many award-winning art quilters and artists of any medium will appreciate the skill taken to convey these lovely stories with sometimes complicated emotions.”

The exhibit will be displayed March 4-25 at the Core Sound’s 806 Museum Store & Gallery located at 806 Arendell Street, Morehead City and will be open Monday through Saturday from 10:00-5:00.  While the exhibit is located in a historic former home, the facility is accessible for the mobility impaired via a ramp from the back parking area and an elevator to the second floor.

Karen Amspacher, Director of the Core Sound Museum & Heritage Center, stated “We’re glad to expand on last year’s successful “From Cape to Cape: A Carteret County Quilt Ramble” event to bring these special art pieces to our area.  The Core Sound Museum holds many heirlooms of Down East families and the ones we will display at Core Sound Museum demonstrate the emotion, creativity and care quilters through history have stitched into their pieces.”

In addition to hanging historic quilts at the Core Sound Museum Down East, the popular Thursday “Parlor Talks” series will feature the following textile-related topics:

March 9:  Sacred Threads Introduction by partner organizations and refreshments.

March 16:  Feed Sacks’ Role in Quilting and Commerce presented by collectors.

March 23:  Quilts as Art presented by Jon Burger, Director of Craven County Arts Council.

Parlor Talks are free and begin at 2:00pm. at the Core Sound Museum Store & Gallery, 806 Arendell Street, Morehead City.

An exhibition of antique quilts will be on display at the Core Sound Museum on Harker's Island recognizing important quilts from their collection and honoring the quilt-makers who have captured the true folk-art form of quilting, from utilitarian to art.  The Museum is open Monday-Saturday 10:00-5:00 and Sunday 2:00-5:00. Quilts by local artists will also be on display during March at the Beaufort Library, 1702 Live Oak Street, Suite 100, Monday-Saturday during regular hours.
